Mokpo city, located in the southwest corner of Korea, is the beautiful port city with scenic beauty and is bordering with Muan in the north, a wide range of islands in the West coast, where Haenam is adjacent to Yeongam. As of December, 2005, it has the population of 242,755 with 90,511 households and is divided into 26 dongs. The total area of Mokpo is 47.92§´, which is a small area corresponding to only 0.4% of the gross area of South Jeolla Province (12,073.46§´). Within the total dimension, forest and field areas occupy 10.36§´(26%), farmland area 11.79§´(25%) and the rest counts for 25.77§´(49%).
Mokpo is a representative port city with middle climate, which is a gift of nature. The average annual temperature is around 14.1¡ÆC, while the average temperature during the month of August is around 28¡ÆC. The rainfall of Mokpo is year average approximately 1,288.3mm with half of this falling in between the months of July to September.

Mokpo is located at the downstream of Yeongsan River, which originates from Damyang and winds the inland of Honam and flows to the south sea. Mokpo, located at the lower Yeongsan River, has earned the prestige as a port of intermediate trade since 1897. Presently, Mokpo is connected to large cities by the Honam railways and West Coast expressways. Travel by Honam railway takes about 3 hours from Seoul to Mokpo and about 30 minutes from Gwangju to Mokpo. Airlines also fly between Seoul and nearby Muan airport. With these convenient transportation means, the city has many advantages as a center of trade.

In December, 2006, the number of companies registered in Mokpo was 19,379 and the employees numbered 69,317. Globally renowned enterprises like HAENGNAM Ceramic and BOHAE Liquor are the main contributors to Mokpo¡¯s economic growth. In 2006 alone, Mokpo¡¯s trade volume reached US$149 Million with US$36Million in export and US$113Million in import.

Mokpo City which aims to become the 21st century international free city will develop into an important center for international exchange within the Yellow Sea economic zone, through its expansion of SOC facilities, including Muan International Airport, Mokpo's new out port, and the west coast highway.
