Influenced by the coastal climate, Ganjin¡¯s climate is the mildest region in Korea and the climate is suitable for human activities. The year average temperature of Gangjin is 14 ¨¬C. The average temperature is the highest in August, averaging 25.9 ¨¬C, and it is the lowest in January averaging 1.8 ¨¬C. The rainfall of Gangjin is year average approximately 1,490mm with half of this falling in between the months of July to September.
Today, Gangjin is the cradle for the preservation and exhibition of traditional Korean celadon porcelain, which was appreciated by Chinese scholars as one of the world's treasures, is distinguished from other types of porcelain by its translucent jade-green color and delicate shapes. Among the National Treasures and other designated-treasure pieces of celadon, 80% were manufactured in Gangjin, including the most valuable celadon in the World. There are now 188 extant kilns for ceramic firing in Gangjin. The reason that celadon production thrived in Gangjin is that the region has a wonderful natural environment, fine clay, and the perfect climate for a celadon-producing district. In order to inform the public about the history and origin of this art, Gangjin has hosted the Celadon Culture Festival every October.
Gangjin's past was less flattering, being the place of internal exile of famous Scholar Yak-yong Jeong, penname "Dasan," who was expelled from Seoul in 1801. In the 17th century, Gangjin was also home to Dutch explorer Hendrick Hamel, who was imprisoned with his shipmates for 7 years in Byeongyeong County.
Since early times, Gangjin has produced the best quality agricultural specialties from this gifted land with abundant sunlight, adequate rain and fertile soil. Especially, Gangjin Rice, grown in the pristine reclamation area, takes pride in the feature of the high glutinousness.
