Muan County, located on the edge of the South Western part of Korea, is geographically and culturally important as the meeting place between the island cultures and the seaside cultures as well as between the Western and Southern cultures. Muan is bordered by the Yeongsan River flowing between Naju and Yeongam-gun to the East, Mokpo to the South, and Hampyeong County to the North. These surroundings have influenced the industrial and cultural structure of Muan County. The size of Muan County is 436§´ and its population is 62,385 as of December, 2005. Its size occupies 3.6% of Jeolla province and its population is 5th among the Counties.
Muan County has 3 geographic features. To the west, Haeje subcounty, Hyeonkyeong subcounty, Mangun subcounty, and Cheongkye subcounty are composed of jagged coastlines and low mountains. Some of them are connected with several islands of Sinan County. Soil from these areas is sandy soil or clay so it is most suitable to grow onion and garlic. In addition the fishing industry is very popular. To the East, Illo town, Samhyang subcounty and Mongtan subcounty are plains where the Yeongsan River flows. The River and the Honam railroad in these areas made distribution of goods and transportation well developed. These surroundings (Plains, Yeongsan River, and Honam railroad) could develop the farming in the area. Muan town, Cheongkye subcounty, Samhyang subcounty centering on Mt. Seungdal are unique mountain farm villages.

The climate in Muan has four distinct seasons. Its geographical features (Muan is surrounded by the Ocean and the river) show its distinctive climate. Annual precipitation amounts to 1,300 mm and 74% of the rains is in May to September. About 80 days a year are sunny and 24 days a year are foggy. The area around Muan International Airport is only foggy for 17 days a year on average.

Muan County is also a key, strategic point leading development in Southwest Korea, with the opening of the West Coast Expressway, the double-tracking of the Honam Line (linking Daejeon with Mokpo) and the construction of Muan International Airport, in line with 21st century demands. Also, Muan is vigorously making efforts to transform itself into the ˇ°Enterprises City of Industry and Tradeˇ± by setting up the Korea/China Science & Technology Park, where it accommodates Air transport Logistics Park, Industrial park, Health & rehabilitation/treatment & recuperative spas, and International tourism complex.

Muan County has preserved beautiful nature with scenic views along a ridged (heavily indented) coastline, stretching over 220 km, and a long history with cultural heritages such as Mt. Seungdal, the celebrated mountain in the Jeolla provinces, overlooking scattered islands and inland. Especially, it boasts of Hoisan Lotus Flower Reservoir, biggest in the orient.

Muan is the biggest onion and garlic production place in Korea, grabbing the 16% and 11% of the national production, respectively. As they grow mostly in the fertile yellow soil and sea breezes, they have the best quality when it comes to taste and scent.
