Wando, one of the six main groups of islands in Korea, is a region that has preserved its natural beauty which was a gift of god, with four vivid seasons and the mountains and the ocean, all in harmony. Wando is situated at the southernmost tip of the Korean Peninsula. It is made up of 201 small and large islands; of these, 54 are inhabited and 147 are uninhabited. Wando lies adjacent to Goheung and Yeosu to the northeast, Haenam and Gangjin to the northwest, and Northern Jeju of Jeju Island to the south, with the sea as the boundary. As of now, the city takes up 3.3% of the total land surface area of the South Jeolla Province with an area of 395.33§´. It has the population of 59,065 with 25,075 households and is divided into 3 towns and 9 subcounties as of December, 2005.
As Wando falls within the temperate zone, it has a warm and humid climate. The county also has four seasons (short springtime and fall, long summertime and winter).
The climate of the county is greatly affected by the sea, and shows the mildest climate in the nation. There is a relatively large amount of precipitation during the summer. The average yearly temperature is 13.9¡É, the average in January is 1.5¡É, and the average during August is 26.0¡É. The average amount of precipitation over the year is 1,091.6 mm.

Wando County consists of 201 large and small islands having ancient mystery, and it is the first-class clean sea area in Korea. Along the 839km coastline, Wando harvests abundant marine products including ear shell, laver, bundle, kelp and flatfish, which is the most delicious and high-quality in nation.

Jang Bo-go, the Great Commissioner, established Cheonghae Garrison during United Shilla Kingdom to build a marine kingdom. It is also a historic and cultural place where Admiral Yi Sun-shin (Chungmugong) and Yun Seon-do (penname: Gosan) used to activate. Especially, to commemorate Commissioner JANG, Wando hosts Jang Bo-go Festival every May.

Wando will stand out as a trading and sightseeing stronghold connecting the inland and the sea after building a highway from Gwangju City to Wando County and considerably improving its traffic condition due to the development of a trade port in it.
