Jindo is the third largest island in Korea, next to Jejudo and Geojedo Island. Jindo, which has about 230 picturesque archipelagos located off the southwestern tip of the Korean peninsular, is known as the birthplace of the arts such as poetry, calligraphy, painting and Korean traditional singing called, "Chang". Considering the Jindo”Æs location on an island, it only borders with Haenam to the northeast, which is main connection to the mainland. Jindo Island, however, is easily accessible with the recent construction of the Jindo Island Bridge. It makes up 3.6% of the total area of Jeonnam Province. The total land size of Jindo accounts for 431 §“, among which the land portion in the south from the truce line corresponds to 67.8%, a vast land size which is about 16.9% of whole land size of South 's. The land is consisted of about 81.6% of forests, whereas the land for farming is only 8.4% and others as 10%. It has 45 inhabited islands and 185 uninhabited islands. As of December, 2006, it has the population of 35,953 with 15,799 households and is composed of 1 town and 6 subcounties.
Considering that Jindo is situated at the Sea, Jindo is greatly affected by the sea. The average temperature in January is about 5.0”ĘC and about 25.1”ĘC in August. The rainfall of Jindo is year average approximately 1,514.2mm with half of this falling in between the months of July to September.

Historically, Jindo Island is the place in which General Yi Sun-sin landed his great naval victory, and is the origin of the beauties of the Southern Provinces. It is also home to symbols of national pride such as the Jindo breed of dogs. In addition, Jindo has other beauties, sound, rhythm and dance. Jindo is also the birthplace of most widely-known folk song `Arirang`, which is well representing Korean's folk songs about love and the joy and sorrow of life.

In the meanwhile, it has well known as historic sites of the old battlefields of 'Sambyeolcho' (troops) that fought against the Mongolian invaders and the Myeongryang Sweeping Victory Site of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, which is long remembered as an important naval battle. Also, the Chinese Matrimony Vine (Gugija) fruit tea that is said to give eternal youth, seaweed and laver collected from rocks of uncontaminated seas, and black medical rice and Jindo Hongju (red wine) all add to the significance of this treasured island.
