| Yeongam County connects with Noryeong Mountains and Mt. Wolchul. Centering around Cheonhwang Peak, its Southeast area is surrounded with Mt. Wolchul. Its Southwest area is a field area around Yeongsan River and Yeongsan Reservoir. In addition, several streams and rivers rise among Mt. Wolchul and hills. |

Yeongam has been a gate to adopt Chinese culture and to deliver it to Japan. It is also the birth place of Dr. Wangin who spread Chinese culture to Japan and became a teacher for Japanese.
Mokpo's New Harbor, Muan International Airport, the West Coast Expressway, and expanded national and local roads are linked to Yeongam from every direction. Yeongam also is reached by National Railroad from Mokpo via Boseung.
There is the 132km©÷ Daebul Industrial Complex and the Samho Local Industrial Complex, through which Seohaean (west coast) Expressway, 2nd and 13th national roads and 819th and 829th local roads (under expansion) run.
As of December, 2006, the number of companies registered in Yeongam was 3,294 and the employees numbered 24,109. Globally renowned enterprises like HYUNDAI SAMHO Heavy Industries Co., the world¡¯s fifth largest shipbuilder, were the main contributors to Yeongam¡¯s economic growth. HYUNDAI SAMHO Heavy Industries Co. is doing the business in various fields such as shipbuilding and off-shore plant at the spacious site of 3,300,000 km2 and holds two kinds of extra-large DOCK with the building capacity of 1.5M GT per year. In 2006 alone, total trade amount in Yeongam recorded US$2,387 Million with US$1,812Million which largely account for ships and off-shore facilities in terms of items.
Currently, in partner with neighboring Haenam County, Yeongam is vigorously making effort to be reborn into the Enterprises City centering on leisure & tour, where it accommodates Theme park, marina, F1 track, hotels, golf course, casino, residential homes, schools, etc.
The center of this area is occupied by the magnificent Mt. Wolchul National Park that is formed of strange rocks and bizarre stone. Yeongsan Lake located here is the largest artificial fresh water reservoir in Asia with a 4 km road and eight water gates. This area was the origin of pottery with artificial glaze 1,200 years age. The Wangin Festival designated as special by the government provides plenty of attractions with a 40km road dotted with cherry blossoms in spring.
