| Hampyeong is bordering Naju as well as Gwangju to the east, Muan to the south, Yeonggwang along with Mt. Bulgap, Jangseong and Mt. Gunyu to the north, and Hampyeong Bay of West Sea to the west. Hampyeong, which is located on the western part of South Jeolla Province, has a land area equal to 393 square kilometers. It comprises 3.3% of south Jeolla province. Within the total dimension, forestland occupies 188§´ (47.9%), farmland area 142§´ (36.1%) and the rest counts for 65§´ (16.3%). As of December, 2008, it has the population of 38,402 with 17,434 households and is divided into 1 town and 8 subcounties. |

The Noryeong Mountains reach into the county southward, and the mountains are low in height. There are Mt. Wolak, Mt. Eosun, and Mt. Bulgap. Stream Gomak and Hampyeong, tributaries of Yeongsan River, flows through it and create a small floodplain. The Rias type coast has severely curved places where reclaimed lands are well developed. The coastal length is 20.6km, where every corner of the coasts boasts of exclusively unique scenery. Agriculture and industries were developed around Streams and their water has been used for agricultural water and people take their valleys as the grounds of living. In this sense, traditionally, Hampyeong has been also called ¡°Hampyeong of Opulence¡± in the ancient times because its extensive field is spread throughout Hampyeong.
Hampyeong located in the southwestern Korean Peninsular is a continental climate. Winter is cold and dry under the influence of the Northwestern periodic wind in the winter and summer is hot and humid under the influence of the Southeastern periodic wind. In this reason, various plants and animals grow and live in. The average yearly temperature is 14.5¡É, the average in January is 2.6¡É, the average in August is 27.2¡É, and the average precipitation per year is 1,350.6 mm.
Hampyeong has earned a domestic and international recognition through Butterfly and Insect Expo, which is presenting the magnificence of tens of thousands of butterflies, soaring amongst an ocean of flowers, across a 33 million square meter site nestled in blissful Hampyeong. During the Festival period, more than one million tourist visit Hampyeong. Also, Hampyeong is only habitat of the golden bats which is in the crisis of extermination in the world. Also Five-colored-woodpeckers, otters, and Korean orchids inhabit and grow in this area, so Hampyeong must be preserved environmentally.
To improve the condition of life, and make Hampyeong more suitable place for people, Hampyeong has developed "Green Hampyeong 21" promoting agreeable environmental plans to make clean air, pure water, and green forest, instead of thoughtless factory developments.
